Our Innovation: Mobile Milk Collection & Cooling System (MMCC)

In India’s dairy landscape, millions of litres of milk are produced daily by smallholder farmers in remote villages. Yet, a significant portion of this milk is at risk of spoilage, not due to a lack of demand, but due to gaps in the cold chain. The journey from milking to the dairy plant is a race against time and bacteria, a race often lost in villages where traditional collection centres are economically unviable.

For decades, the standard approach to rural milk collection has relied on fixed Village Milk Collection Centres (VMCCs) equipped with Bulk Milk Coolers (BMCs). However, this model presents a critical challenge. Establishing and operating these centres in low-volume, remote villages is often economically unfeasible. The high capital expenditure for infrastructure, coupled with the ongoing operational costs and reliance on continuous grid power—which is notoriously unreliable in rural areas—creates a significant barrier.

The Prompt Mobile Milk Collection & Cooling System (MMCC) is the solution to this challenge. It’s a paradigm shift that turns the concept of a milk collection centre on its head.

Instead of requiring farmers to travel to a fixed location, the MMCC brings the entire procurement ecosystem—collection, testing, weighing, and rapid chilling—directly to the farmer’s doorstep. It is a truck-mounted, self-contained platform that eliminates the need for costly village-level infrastructure. By integrating Prompt’s patented Thermal Storage Technology, the MMCC provides grid-independent, rapid chilling during collection, ensuring milk quality is preserved from the moment of purchase until it reaches the dairy plant . It is a step towards a more inclusive, efficient, and sustainable dairy economy.

Industry Challenges

Rural milk procurement faces significant hurdles that impact quality, farmer income, and dairy profitability. The traditional model of fixed collection centres is often impractical in remote areas, leading to a fragmented and inefficient supply chain.

Economic Unviability in Remote Areas: The high cost of establishing and operating fixed Village Milk Collection Centres and Bulk Milk Coolers in low-volume villages makes it financially unsustainable.

Farmer Inconvenience & Reduced Participation: Farmers in remote villages are forced to travel long distances to the nearest collection centre, discouraging participation and leading to milk being sold to unorganized sectors at lower prices .

Grid Dependency & High Operating Costs: Traditional village-level coolers require a reliable and continuous electricity supply. In rural India, where power cuts are frequent, dairies are forced to rely on expensive and polluting diesel generators to keep milk chilled.

Delayed Chilling & Quality Loss: Without chilling infrastructure at the point of collection, milk is often stored at ambient temperature for hours, leading to rapid bacterial growth, reduced shelf life (MBRT), and significant spoilage.

Lack of Transparency: Traditional manual methods of milk testing and payment recording are prone to errors and lack transparency, eroding farmer trust and making it difficult to implement quality-based payment systems.

Prompt Solution: Prompt Mobile Milk Collection & Cooling System (MMCC)

Prompt’s MMCC directly addresses these challenges by consolidating the entire procurement process into a single mobile platform. It brings the dairy plant’s capabilities to the village, eliminating the need for permanent infrastructure.

At the heart of the MMCC is the Thermal Storage Technology, which is pre-charged at the dairy plant. This stored cooling energy allows the system to chill milk to ≤4°C instantaneously during the collection route, without requiring the vehicle’s engine to run a compressor or relying on village grid power. This ensures a seamless and reliable cold chain, even in areas with no electricity .

This means:

  • Milk procurement is extended to remote and low-volume villages.
  • Milk quality is assured through immediate on-site chilling.
  • Farmer trust is built through transparent, digital testing and instant payments.
  • Operational costs are lowered by eliminating infrastructure and diesel dependency.
